ILLINOIS SUPREME COURT EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES - Grounds/Maintenance Specialist

Division: Supreme Court Building and Maintenance Judicial Branch Employment Application
Salary: $32,086 per year

Reporting Relationship: Supreme Court Physical Facilities Manager  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: This position is responsible for ensuring the grounds of the Supreme Court building are attractive, orderly, and healthy. This position is additionally assigned custodial duties inside the building. Work is performed under the supervision of the Supreme Court Physical Facilities Manager and is reviewed on the basis of the conditions of the grounds, work performed, and assignments completed.

 

FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

  • Operates vehicles and power equipment, such as mowers, tractors, lawn edgers, leaf and snow blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, and pruning saws.
  • Mows and edges lawn, using power mowers and/or edgers.
  • Cares for established lawn by fertilizing, mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls.
  • Uses hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes.
  • Prunes or trims trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
  • Rakes and bags leaves.
  • Mixes and sprays or spreads fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
  • Collects and removes trash from the grounds, sweeps ramps, stairs, walkways and parking lots.
  • Shovels snow and ice from ramps and walkways; applies sand and/or salt as needed.
  • Maintains and makes minor repairs to tools and equipment; changes oil and filters and sharpens blades.
  • Waters lawn, trees or plants, using portable sprinkler systems, hoses, or watering cans.
  • Maintains sprinkler system including winterizing and starting them up in the spring.
  • Plants seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, or shrubs and applies mulch for protection, using gardening tools.
  • Trims or picks flowers and cleans flower beds.
  • Spreads topsoil or spreads straw over seeded soil to hold soil in place.
  • Responsible for reporting equipment problems, landscaping/grounds issues and supply or equipment needs to supervisor.
  • Responsible for custodial duties in the building as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency and a minimum of one year experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance is required.

Applicant must possess working knowledge and operation of various hand tools and power maintenance equipment; working knowledge and ability to inspect maintenance equipment to identify any problems or defects; ability to work independently or in a team environment; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to use independent judgment within established practice and procedural guidelines; demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills; possess strong time management skills and be thorough in work performance; and possess a valid Illinois driver’s license and demonstrate proof of automobile insurance to operate a personal vehicle on state business, as well as maintain a safe driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and whole body movement, such as reaching, bending, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking and stooping; ability to safely operate hand tools and power equipment and perform minor maintenance on such equipment; ability to safely mix and apply chemicals; ability to rake leaves using hand rake or vacuum; ability to shovel snow and ice and spread sand and salt; and ability to safely use cleaning products and equipment.
