5/31/2023

The bar admission ceremony for the 309 new attorneys who passed the February 2023 Bar Exam and three other admittees was held online on May 8. Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis presided over the ceremony and administered the oath to the new admittees. Justice Lisa Holder White made the motion to admit the class and Justice Joy V. Cunningham seconded the motion.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to congratulate the new admittees on passing the bar exam and becoming attorneys,” Chief Justice Theis said. “We welcome you to the legal profession and urge you to remember the oath you will be taking to support the Illinois and U.S. Constitutions.”

All of the candidates sworn-in passed a bar examination and a required ethics examination and were certified by the Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness.

The number of admittees for each district is as follows:

  • First District: 239
  • Second District: 22
  • Third District: 31
  • Fourth District: 9
  • Fifth District: 11

The new attorneys sworn in at the bar admission ceremony brings the total number of licensed attorneys in Illinois to approximately 96,000.
